Duodenal Switch Surgery In Mexico

By Jocelyn Davidson

Duodenal switch surgery combines restrictive and mal absorptive surgery for weight loss. It is done to minimize the food amount an individual is able to consume and also the amount of calories getting absorbed and used by the body. It involves creation of a moderately sized stomach pouch and bypassing of some small intestine sections. Persons considering duodenal switch surgery in Mexico should get to know the details about the procedure before opting for it.

It can either be performed in a surgical center or hospital and general anesthesia is used. Half-inch long incisions are made in several areas of the stomach as well as the middle of the abdomen. As a result, the stomach is left attached to the first small intestine segment. This segment is known as the duodenum. There is then separation of the duodenum from remaining sections of the ileum.

There is then attachment of the duodenum to the lower part of the ileum. This is done while bypassing most of the second and also third small intestine segments. The surgeon confirms that there are no leakages, after which the instruments used are withdrawn followed by closing of the made incisions. Closure of the incisions is done using absorbable sutures or sterile tape.

The results of duodenal switching are excellent. Patients will be able to lose 70 to 80 percent of the excess weight within a period of two years. On the downside, patients are likely to contract nutritional deficiency diseases than would be the case if they used other weight loss surgeries. As a result, they will have to keep using nutritional supplements for their entire life. These supplements include vitamins and minerals.

In the long run, patients that go for the duodenal switch will achieve lasting results. The fact that the body is not able to absorb all the ingested food means one does not have go for lifestyle changes as is the case with various other types of bariatric surgery. In addition, a patient is able to eat larger food portions and thus get better satisfaction.

The benefits of the procedure are diverse, starting of course with the efficient loss of weight. One will have better quality of eating because of the normal stomach. There is the removal of the part of the food pouch that has the hormone that stimulates hunger, which means hunger and appetite are considerably reduced. For people that take anti-inflammatory drugs, formation of ulcer will not be increased. It is also possible to partially reverse the intestinal bypass in case one is having mal-absorptive complications.

On the downside, patients will have increased probability of suffering from chronic diarrhea, very smelly stools and gas. When the mal-absorption is significant, one may suffer from anemia, protein deficiency and metabolic bone disease. These conditions affect about 15 percent of patients. When taken in excess, carbohydrates could lead to one suffering from abdominal pain or long term regain of weight.

There is the possibility of having complications just like is the case with most surgeries. These include duodenal leak, small bowel obstruction and post-operative nausea. If performed by experienced surgeons, chances of complications are minimal.
