What To Know About Organic Klamath Blue Green Alge

By Sally Delacruz

Upper Klamath Lake, also called Klamath Lake, is a freshwater lake located in Oregon. The large, shallow body of water is located east of Cascade Range in the south-central portion of the state. Its surface area makes it the largest body of fresh water in Oregon. Organic Klamath blue green alge has become a popular topic among those interested in natural health.

Aphonizomenon flos-aquae is the technical name for the algae that the lake produces. It is much like spirulina and chlorella, although there are many differences worth noting. A lot of folks talk about the benefits that come with utilizing this algae.

Although this is grown in other places, there is not any like that found in this lake. That which is found in other parts of the world is considered highly toxic. For one reason or anything, the Klamath Lake algae is believed to be 100 percent pure and toxin free. This is why people have chosen to ingest it for its many benefits. Furthermore, there is no shortage of the substance in this area.

It is approximated that thousands of kilograms in algae are harvested from this lake on a yearly basis. Most goes to businesses working in the supplement industry. During the summer, growth is so large that the lake becomes green in color and native fish die because the algae takes all the oxygen from the water.

There are many benefits that are thought to come of using this substance. Although a lot of claims have been made about the powerful health benefits, there is not a lot of research to verify the validity of said claims. Some commonly touted benefits include its ability to suppress tumors, enhance the immune system and function as a plant source of vitamin B12. As is true of other blue-green algaes, this has high amounts of iron, protein and phytonutrients.

It also features a lot of phycocyanin. The algae is actually said to have higher amount of the compound than all other food sources. Spirulina is known for having approximately five percent of this, but the Klamath Lake algae has three times that at approximately 15 percent. Phycocyanin is a natural antioxidant that forms in cyanobacteria. This is believed to reduce inflammation present in the body, as well as oxidative stress.

There is not evidence that can prove the claims made about the benefits of this and so it should be used cautiously. Very few studies have been done on this substance and so there are rightfully skeptics. It is suggested that persons speak with their doctor or a health care professional prior to incorporating this into their daily supplementation. This may work for some and not for others, but it may be best to start off with it in small doses.

Many health companies offer this in the form of supplements, be it powder or pills. It might be the algae only or other natural substances added as well. The cost for these products will vary, but this is not as widely available or affordable as most other health supplements. Make sure to follow instructions and only buy goods from trusted sources.
